Obverse Design

Indian Bust facing left with the legend "WOODEN NICKEL" above. The legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" curves along the bottom of the wooden nickel. This design is apparently the "6. Indian head with U.S.A. & without circle" design on the Old Time Wooden Nickel Company's museum page.

Reverse Design The legend "PANAMA 100th ANNIVERSARY" curves along the top. A second line curving underneath the first line says "1903-2003". The legend "TOKENS . MEDALS . PAPER MONEY" curves along the bottom. Above that another line curves along the bottom and says "PANAMA COINS". The center of the reverse has five lines as follows:

Varieties There are three varieties, all with the same reverse design. One variety has an Indian Head bust as the obverse design. Another variety has a Buffalo as the obverse design. The final variety was apparently a test piece (or pattern) and has a blank obverse.
Function Warren Plumer plans to use these wooden nickels as business cards, so coin dealers with Panama numismatic items of interest can contact him. Warren has also made a few of these wooden nickels available to collectors via ebay.
Population Count Warren ordered a total of 250 pieces, equally divided between the Indian Head design and the Buffalo design. Perhaps the manufacturer uses weight to determine the count, or just is generous because what Warren received was 128 nickels of the Indian Head design and 136 nickels of the Buffalo design, as well as one nickel with a blank obverse.
